Kirsty Thomson, founder and CEO at The Circle Dundee, is one of 5 people from across Scotland who has been given an ‘Grow It ’ award from Unltd Scotland.

“I am delighted to be recognised for my work over the last 2 years setting up the Circle Dundee and thank you to the Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers for all their support on this journey”.

The Grow It Award is for social entrepreneurs looking to scale their venture providing tailored support, access to workshops and networks, and up to £15,000 cash. The application process was an online application and a pitch to a national panel in Edinburgh in May 2017.

 

Kirsty had spotted a problem many of her clients were facing and an opportunity to solve it, so The Circle was born. Kirsty embarked on negotiating a lease on a mostly abandoned industrial building, a former Government training centre. Her eye for potential saw a community hub that could provide office space, meeting rooms and co-working space for charities, social enterprises and businesses with room for a café and gardens. With initial feasibility funding in the bag, Kirsty has begun recruiting tenants and building a Board of Directors to support the project. With 15 offices, five meeting rooms and two co-working spaces, no venue of this type or scale currently exists in the area, and as far as we know, in Scotland.

The Circle can offer innovative training and employment opportunities. They will work to strengthen collaboration, partnership-working and connectivity to the wider community. As a result of piloting the space for the past year or so they have seen an increase in the number of volunteers involved with their work and the work of tenants. The tenants are ACK, Ashton McGill, Apex Scotland, Food Training, Prestige Health and Safety Training, Rathbone, The Story Edge, Lumilo Casting Studio and Cornerstone and Uppertunity. They have a number of tenants lined up to move in the coming months.

With 20 years of work in the sector under her belt, she is using her energy and skills to help organisations thrive. Specifically, she is helping them meet their social goals by transforming their business functions: marketing, events, fundraising, strategy and planning. By helping organisations think in a more business-like way, they are more likely to rise to financial and regulatory challenges and continue their important work. She is also working hard to make sure that the work of the 3rd sector is appropriately recognised by those in Government, the local authority and in business and that social enterprises are properly understood.

After the  successful Spring Programme, 5by20 Dundee kick starts this Autumn with the one week intensive Fast Track to Business Success, followed by a series of short courses that focus on Exploring your Business IdeaPlanning  your Business, Managing Your Business and Growing Your Business.  All courses are FREE to attend however booking is essential as places are limited.  All booking links can be found on the links below.

THE WISE GROUP CELEBRATES BECOMING THE 845th LIVING WAGE EMPLOYER

845th Employer to commit to at least £8.45 per hour

Wise Group (DSEN Member)  has today accredited as the 845th Living Wage employer.

Mr. Keith Brown, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work is visiting Dundee to celebrate the Wise Group becoming the 845th accredited Living Wage employer in Scotland and to highlight the importance of the Living Wage in the Scottish and local economies.

The Wise Group has been transforming lives through social enterprise since 1983. Supporting over 50,000 people a year we make a positive difference to people, communities and society by helping customers gain new skills and employment, reducing re-offending, regenerating communities and tackling fuel poverty. We have a clear understanding of the type of support our customers need and have a proven track record of providing both innovative and high quality services. The Wise Group delivers results by working closely with stakeholders and partners.

The Living Wage commitment confirms that all Wise Group staff receive a minimum hourly wage of £8.45. This rate is significantly higher than the statutory minimum wage for over 25s of £7.50 per hour introduced in April 2017.

The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. It is calculated according to the real costs of living.

Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work Mr Keith Brown said:

“The Living Wage is set at £8.45 an hour, so it’s fitting that I’m here to celebrate the Wise Group becoming the 845th accredited Living Wage employer in Scotland. This proven investment in people leads to increased productivity and reduced staff absence, while sending a strong signal about fairness to your organisation’s stakeholders, and I applaud Wise for recognising its value.

“As well as setting a great example to other businesses, and in particular other social enterprise’s across Scotland, this achievement marks another positive milestone on our journey towards having 1,000 Living Wage accredited employers by autumn 2017.”

Vacant Property Refurbishment Service – Positive Steps

Within our community we have individuals and families who are homeless or who are under threat of homelessness.

There are also vacant properties in need of repair or refurbishment .  Positive Step’s Vacant Property Service can bring these properties back in to the rental sector and provide properties to the most vulnerable in our communities.

Landlords can be faced with financial responsibilities and vacant assets.   Charges and taxes continue in vacant properties without any income , repairs cannot be made. Positive Steps can help Landlords change these properties in to homes and provide more much needed homes

Positive Steps provide refurbishment up to the value of £3000  and in return use the property  for their Supported Accommodation Service without rental charges until refurbishment has been recouped.

This can be cost effective for Landlords as they are no longer faced with costs of an empty property as well as a unused asset.
